A black leotard, pink tights, and ballet shoes are articles that one might look right past, however those few items have played a key role in my life as a dancer, student and person. Throughout my study of dance, I have come to realize who I really am. Before high school, I danced for fun and it was something to keep me busy. However, I have come to realize that it has been one of the most important aspects of my life, right now. My dance teacher has always encouraged me to do the best that I can do and made me grasp the fact that dance will help me throughout life. She has been encouraging me all of the way, with the thought of me becoming a more talented dancer as well as an independent person. From this extra effort on her part, I have found that dance is an art instead of a pastime. I have found a strong passion for what I do. I have determined that the lessons I learn while dancing will take me far in life. It is not just about the movement, but about the emotion and the experience gained.

I truly believe that both of those things and my love for dance has guided me to my career. I started assisting and teaching dance classes to younger children, which has become something that I truly enjoy and have a passion to do. I have found that I have a love for assisting others in succeeding. I have worked with children as young as two and one half years old to as old as fourteen, and they have been part of my encouragement to pursue teaching as a career. I have become conscious of the fact that it is a great feeling to see someone who started dancing in August and would rather stay attached to their mother’s leg then to step in the dance studio, become the star of the show, which cannot wait to get out on that stage. I also believe that I have helped those toddlers become associated with persons of there same age group. I think that my job is not only to help them become skilled performers, but grow and flourish into great individuals.

Their interaction with others at a young age will help them in the long run. From my knowledge and work with these children, I have realized how important teachers are in a person’s life. All of the dancers that I have worked with look up to me and sometimes follow my every move. That is the way that I act with my teachers, because I have such admiration for them. Because of this, I know that I want to be a positive role model for people by becoming a teacher. I want to educate others and allow them to have a positive experience throughout their education.

I know this from my own experience. Dancing has introduced me to new and interesting people. These people include all of the wonderful people that I have had the opportunity to dance with on the pom pon squad during high school. Some of these girls have been with me for the past three years. They have influenced me to try my hardest and be the best that I can be. Since I have excelled in this extracurricular area, I became a captain of the varsity squad. This has been a great achievement, because I am able to share my love for dance and leading groups. Since the squad is made up of juniors and seniors, the coach allows my co-captain and me to direct many of the activities that we participate in. So, I have been able to do my best in leading groups of all sizes.

My leadership skills have also shown through within the Eurythmic Dance Company that I participate through my high school. Last year, I choreographed a piece for our main performance in May. This was another way for me to express my intense love for dance, and share it with others. I was able to help my peers learn a new form of dance in which they were unfamiliar. My hard work throughout the season resulted in me receiving the director’s award. This award is decided by the directors.

It is someone who they feel has shown their hard work, helped them, and has skills of a director. This year they decided to have a team of three seniors who will make up the leadership counsel. We will be responsible for organizing information that everyone must know. We will also have to convey messages from the directors to the dancers. This is an important role, because I will be responsible for everything. After all of my experiences, I have come to understand how important dance is in my life. It has given me the skill and understanding of my life goals and expectations. I have become more and more aware of what I want to do with my life after high school.
